DRY EYE ASSESSMENTS

Dry Eye

Dry eye is an extremely common problem. Patient’s with dry eye often hear that nothing can be done or are only given artificial tear drops to help. Here at M S Kalsi Opticians we provide Specialist Dry Eye Checks.

Symptoms of dry eye syndrome can include:

  • Tired eyes (usually by the end of the day)

  • Blurred vision (improved on blinking/rubbing of the eyes)

  • Red/Sore Eyes

  • Gritty or burning sensation

  • Itchy eyelids

  • Watery eyes

  • Light sensitivity

Common Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome:

  • Age - can occur at any age - children to adults

  • Working Environment - air conditioning

  • Contact lens wearer

  • Ocular surgery – particularly following laser refractive surgery (LASIK/LASEK) or Cataracts

  • Medications

  • Smoker or Drinker

  • Underlying medical conditions – e.g. Sjorgren’s Syndrome

  • Underlying ocular conditions – e.g. Blepharitis

There are many different types of dry eye, the most common being:

  • Evaporative Dry Eye – deficiency in the lipid layer of the tear film causes evaporation of tears from the ocular surface

  • Aqueous Deficiency Dry Eye – reduction in quantity of tears is released from the glands, causing a thinner, less stable tear layer
